In December 2020, Shepherd Care for the Less Privileged Foundation undertook a critical health system–strengthening intervention through the purchase of essential medical equipment for the renovation and upgrade of Good Shepherd Hospital in Ekengbo Community, Ebonyi Local Government Area, Ebonyi State. This activity was driven by a clear and urgent need to improve the hospital’s capacity to deliver safe, timely, and quality healthcare services to the surrounding rural population.

Good Shepherd Hospital serves as a key referral point for Ekengbo and neighboring communities. However, prior to this intervention, the hospital faced serious limitations due to outdated or insufficient equipment, particularly in its theatre, labour ward, newborn unit, and laboratory. These gaps affected the quality of care available to patients and increased referrals to distant facilities, often at great cost and risk to patients and their families.

To address these challenges, the project focused on equipping critical service areas within the hospital. Priority was given to the theatre complex, where modern equipment was procured to support surgical procedures and emergency care. Items supplied included an operating table, theatre lights, patient monitor, surgical packs, electrical suction machine, sterile instruments cupboard, theatre scrubs and gowns, surgical gowns, headlight apron, green sheets, theatre socks and slippers, waste bins, pus ozone meter, oxygen hood, blood pressure apparatus, drip stands, and an ambulance to improve emergency response and patient referrals.

The labour ward also received significant support aimed at strengthening maternal health services. Equipment procured for this unit included delivery beds, instrument cupboards, sets of delivery packs, aprons, ambu-bag masks, and syringes with suction bulbs. These additions were intended to improve the safety and comfort of women during childbirth while supporting healthcare workers to manage both routine deliveries and obstetric emergencies more effectively.

Recognizing the vulnerability of newborns, the project equally prioritized the Newborn Unit. Equipment purchased for this section included baby incubator machines, phototherapy machines, baby cots, radiant warmers, suction machines, and oxygen cylinders. With these tools in place, the hospital is now better equipped to manage premature births, neonatal jaundice, and other life-threatening conditions affecting newborns.

The hospital laboratory was not left out. To improve diagnostic capacity and ensure accurate and timely test results, key laboratory equipment such as a spectrophotometer, automated electrolyte machine, and ultrasound machine were procured. These upgrades have significantly enhanced the hospital’s ability to support clinical decision-making and reduce delays in treatment.

Overall, this intervention has strengthened the operational capacity of Good Shepherd Hospital and improved access to quality healthcare for the Ekengbo community and its environs. Health workers now operate in a better-equipped environment, while patients benefit from safer procedures, improved diagnostics, and more responsive care.

The procurement of these equipment represents a meaningful investment in community health and aligns with Shepherd Care for the Less Privileged Foundation’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery in underserved areas.
