Between 22nd January 2022 and 17th June 2023, Shepherd Care for the Less Privileged Foundation successfully implemented the construction and commissioning of Anny Drexel Hospital in Agba, Ishielu Local Government Area, Ebonyi State. The hospital was named in honor of Austrian philanthropist Anny Drexel, recognizing her immense contribution to the initiative.
This intervention was a welcome development in the community, as it addressed a critical gap in healthcare access. Until the establishment of the hospital, residents had no local hospital and often had to travel long distances to access medical services. Today, it remains the only hospital built in the area, providing essential health services to a large population of underserved communities.
The project began with site clearing and preparation in January 2022 and involved the construction of thirteen rooms and multiple service areas designed to provide comprehensive healthcare. These include a general ward, private ward, ante-natal clinic, reception, consulting rooms, nurse cubby, injection room, pharmacy, laboratory, theatre, recovery room, changing room, labour ward, store, toilets, sit-rooms, and other conveniences. In addition, rooms were specifically allocated for patients’ relatives and visitors, ensuring comfort and convenience for both patients and caregivers.
Community involvement was central to the project’s success. Mr. Joseph Nwadi, a local community leader, generously donated four plots of land free of charge to facilitate construction. Residents were actively engaged in discussions and planning meetings, helping to ensure that the hospital would meet the healthcare needs of the community effectively. Their support and involvement enhanced local ownership and created a sense of pride and responsibility for the facility.
The running and management of Anny Drexel Hospital is overseen by the Congregation of Sisters of Jesus the Good Shepherd (SJGs), ensuring professional administration, adherence to medical standards, and consistent healthcare delivery.
Occasionally, free medical care and outreach programs are organized for community members, while other services are offered at subsidized rates to improve accessibility, particularly for low-income families.
The establishment of Anny Drexel Hospital has had a transformative impact on Agba and surrounding villages. Residents now have access to quality healthcare close to home, reducing travel time, improving emergency response, and enhancing overall wellbeing.
Families have expressed immense gratitude for the initiative, noting that the hospital has brought hope and reassurance to communities that previously struggled with limited health infrastructure.
